Born 1951 in the UK. Studied mathematics at Cambridge. Since 1974 based in the Netherlands. PhD 1979, Free University, Amsterdam. From 2006 professor at Leiden, then Utrecht, then Leiden again, where I am now emeritus, as scientifically active as ever. Research fields: mathematical statistics, medical statistics, probability theory, quantum information, forensic science, science communication, miscarriages of justice, serial killer nurses. Member of Royal Dutch Academy of Science, past president of Dutch statistical society. Hobbies: foraging for edible wild mushrooms, walking and cycling, reading and music, art and history.
